IMAF Auction Wallhanging
I'm not really a wallhanging sort of girl most of the time- somehow it seems like a quilt should fit a bed, even if it's displayed on a wall, but I wanted to make a quilt for the Iowa Medical Aid Fund auction, so it seemed time to suck it up and go with a wallhanging which would be doable in terms of time commitment and my machine quilting skills.
I like the bright colors and black combo of this piece- I'm not thrilled with the image- I wanted to do something more like a temple or a dancer but I couldn't find the right inspiration image and those concepts seemed to require a more soothing background than the brights that I used. I was very happy with my hand applique on this piece. It was pretty well executed, even the points on the flower- years of practice seem to have paid off. I'm definitely faster than I used to be. The machine quilting... I think I've gotten the hang of rotating the fabric to create the stipple pattern, but my tension is still inconsistent on the back. This was driving me absolutely nuts. Enough so that I wasn't going to put it on the auction, but had my coworkers take a look and they all really liked it and said go for it, so I did. I don't know who eventually bought it, but it sold for more than I valued it, so that's good.
The auction is part of what kept me from posting for so long. I did the set up for the silent and live auction, as well as all the prep and window dressing (with volunteers helping.) It took a lot more work than I envisioned, but it went off well. And we raised $14,000 for the fund to help women who need/have chosen abortion but are denied medical coverage for the procedure. Another small victory against the religious nutcakes who think the government should use its programs to dictate morality. If you feel this is as outrageous as I do- there are abortion funds like ours helping women all over the country. Visit http://www.nnaf.org/ for more information.
